The Benefits of Healthy Protein Shakes for Children
Isn't it wonderful when our children are active? I know, sometimes we have a hard time keeping up with them, but the healthy radiance that they have when they have been running, swimming, cycling, skateboarding - it makes parenting all the more worth while. All of this is part of what makes growing up fun. Not only our children's growth, but our own growth as parents too.
But what toll does all of this activity take on our children's growing bodies?
Their bodies are constantly growing. Our children's muscles, skin, hair and organs are always in a state of growth.
Our children's young bodies require protein.
Why Do Our Children Require Protein?
Protein in children is critical for important functions such as:
- Muscle and tissue growth and repair;
- Providing energy when carbohydrates are not available;
- The creation of enzymes or enzyme subunits;
- pH regulation in the blood;
- Controlling metabolism related processes in the body;
- Building their immune systems via protein antibodies.
In other words, proteins are important for everything from your child's growth to building their immune system to help protect them from illness to keeping everything from their hair and nails to their skin, bones and organs healthy.
How Much Protein Do Our Children Need?
So how much protein do our children, and us (for we have to try to keep up with them), need each day? It depends on how active your child is and adjustments should be made in accordance with their activity level. Very active children involved in high energy sports will require more proteins and nutrition. The normal Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for protein, determined by body weight and age are:
- 1 to 3 year-old children: 0.55 grams of protein per pound of body weight
- 4 to 6 year-old children: 0.50 grams of protein per pound of body weight
- 7 to 14 year-old children: 0.45 grams of protein per pound of body weight
- 15+ year old children and adults: 0.40 grams of protein per pound of body weight
Our kids get their vitamins, proteins, minerals and other nutrients through a healthy diet. Vegetables, eggs, meats, fruit, milk products, all of these nutritous foods allow our children to grown healthy and strong.
Sometimes its just not enough. As parents, our schedules can be busy and we don't take the time needed to make a complete meal for our kids. Everyone is rushing to get ready in the morning and the kids are eating some toast with jam or cereals, pre-sweetened or covered with sugar. Is this giving them the proteins and vitamins that they need for the day? Not really, but it isn't every day that we can fry up some egg whites on spelt toast and slice up some fruit for them.
This is where a delicious healthy protein shake can be a fast fun way in which to provide your children with the proteins and vitamins that their growing bodies need.
Some of my kids' favorite protein shakes are below:
Michelle's Mighty Breakfast Protein Shake
Michelle, our youngest daughter, is a healthy, growing four year-old. Her breakfast protein shake favorite is:
- 1 washed and peeled mango pitted and diced up
- 3 medium oranges, the juice from them
- 4 - 6 ripe washed strawberries (or frozen if not in season)
- 1/2 banana, peeled and diced
- 1 scoop of Protein Extreme
Toss all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until nice and smooth. Pour into a glass and serve.
What a great way for our daughter to get her protein in addition to other important vitamins and minerals.
Kirill's Lucky Lunch Protein Shake
Kirill is a growing active 9 year-old boy. Soccer, skate boarding, hockey, hiking, fishing, biking - always on the move. I do not have a chance in keeping up with the young man. He is growing fast and needs his proteins and vitamins, there is no question about that.
This young man's favorite lunch protein shake is:
- 1 fresh peach peeled and pitted
- 1/2 cup of blueberries (frozen if not in season)
- 1 apple, peeled, cored and diced
- 1 scoop of Protein Extreme
Place all of the ingredients into a blender and blend well. If it is coming out too thick, add a little unsweetened pure apple juice to the mixture and blend again until smooth. Pour into a glass and serve.
Adam's Delicious Dessert Protein Shake
This yummy protein shake is a favorite of my 18-year-old son (and mine as well!) as a dessert or as a tasty snack instead of filling up on junk food.
- 1 ripe banana, peeled and diced
- 1 cup of soymilk
- 1 scoop of organic cocoa flavored energy protein
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- 1 teaspoon of almond butter
- 1 - 2 drops of real vanilla extract
- small pinch (less than 1/8 of a teaspoon) of ground nutmeg
- 3 icecubes
Place all of the ingredients into the blender and blend until well mixed. Pour into a glass and serve.
We hope that you enjoy these scrumptous protein shake recipes as much as our family does.
Please keep in mind that these recipes for tasty protein shakes and smoothies are not intended to replace a well balanced nutritious diet, but to complement it to ensure that our children are receiving their full daily Recommended Dietary Allowance. Make certain to take into account any special dietary requirements or restrictions due to allergies or as may be prescribed by your doctor or physician. If your children are receiving enough protein from other sources, these great protein shake recipes may still be made without the addition of protein powder in order to provide your children with a healthy delicious snack containing other important vitamins and minerals for their growth.
Enjoy your delicious veggie and fruit protein shakes and smoothies in good health!
